Learn To Play The Piano

Friday, June 8th, 2012

One request that I get from time to time is “Is it to late for me to learn to play the piano?”  Of course, my response is “It’s NEVER to late to learn”.

There are a lot of courses available on the internet that are good courses to take to learn the piano when you are older and have an interest.  One I can suggest from personal experience is  Scott offers a very intuitive and concise way to learn.  Some more traditional teachers may say that this course doesn’t go far enough to explain all of the details.  My opinion is that it is pretty “spot-on” in its delivery.  No frills, just a simple and easy to understand course on learning to play the piano.

Nothing happens overnight but, one thing I want to point out is;  when you look at the piano most people see 88 notes.   All different, all types of notes, lines, squiggly things, etc. and after all “who can learn all of that”.  The secret is that there are only 12 notes that you have to learn.  These notes are represented in different places on the music staff (the thing with five lines and little round things in it) and all music has a set of rules you have to learn.  Once you learn those 12 notes (more…)

Having fun in piano classes

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Hopefully, you are not bored with the whole talk about piano lessons, but, I cant help myself.  For the past few weeks I have been having the joy of teaching a few  guys in  our group lesson on Play Piano in a Flash by Scott Houston on Tuesday nights.

I can’t tell you how delighted I am with the fact that these guys are really learning to play and doing well at it.  Several weeks ago when we first started with them they were not able to play at all and after 8 weeks or so, they are playing several songs.  Their ability to learn and develop thier own skills has been amazing.  They are understanding just how simple it is to learn to play the piano and having fun doing it.

All of them are at the point in the learning process that they are beginning to pick up things on thier own now  and getting an idea of how to play the piano by themselves.  I am very impressed that they are also able to hear thier mistakes AND fix them on thier own.

Learning is a very simple process, mastering it becomes a matter of practice time and being disciplined enough to take the time and practice.  Just like excercise makes your body stronger, practice makes you more comfortable with the piano keys and the more you practice the better you become.

We have private classes through our School of  Music that a person can use the teacher as  a private instructor. Our teacher Marko Paul can lead you in a more tradition style to  understand music in a more tradition way.  I on the other hand break all the rules to make learning a little easier for the adults only.

If you get a chance to enroll in the next Play Piano in a Flash class please do and you can see for yourself just how fun this can be.

Drop by and see us sometime we would love to meet you.

Play Piano in a Flash Class

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I am very excited that we are heading  into book two with our Tuesday night group class here at in Mission Valley, San Diego, Ca.

Our group class has begun to grow and tonight we are adding two more to the class.  This is gonna be fun.  So far we have taken adult men that have never played before in their lives and taught them how to play a few songs.  They come every Tuesday night and actually look forward to the class.

We are growing the piano group classes and as it increases even more people are having fun.  This month we introduced the PianoSD School of Music so I know that the summer is going to produce some amazing students and talent.

If you decide you want to particpate in learning-“stop dreaming and start playing” We CAN help you.

Stop by and say hello sometime, we would love to meet you.

Ric Overton and Emmy Award winning Scott Houston at in Mission Valley, San Diego Ca.

Yesterday was a blast with Scott Houston talking about the Play Piano in a Flash classes here at in Mission Valley, San Diego, Ca.

Scott was in town yesterday having done a presentation for NAMM to the Piano Manufacturers Association he asked to come and visit and he and I decided to make an event out of his time here.  He greeted customers and talked to them about the Play Piano in a Flash program and how much fun people are having across the country learning to play.  He emphasized the fun of  learning to play and how simple it is to learn to play piano when you are given the right set of instructions.

As many of you know we also do a Streaming show called Live@PianoSD which you can access through our new website and click on the icon Live@PianoSD .  Scott took the time yesterday to do this with me and it was great to have a small snipet about what he does on PBS every week.  Scott is a 4 time Emmy Award winner and is going into his 14th season with PBS teaching people all over the nation and internationally how to play the piano.

Scott’s love for our industry and his willingness to help manufacturers, retailers promote the music business is fantastic coupled with the drive he has to help average people discover thier dream of learning to play the piano is obvious in his exuberance.  I hope you get a chance to watch the show on Live@PianoSD as well as your local PBS station simply entitled, Scott Houston The Piano Guy or look for Play Piano In A Flash.

Drop by and see us sometime we would love to meet you.

The New Site Is Up

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Afte many months of work Max of has finished and this is the first post.

As some may have realized by now I am not always the easiest person to understand but, Max was able to see through all the cobwebs and get a great looking site from my mind.  His ability to interpret my brainwaves is amazing.  I don’t know if its a good thing or bad thing (probably the latter)(for him at least) that he can actually read my mind now.

As a result the website is up and running and we sincerely hope you approve.  Take a look when you have a chance and tell me what you think.

In addition to the launch of the new site we are also announcing the beginning of the School Of Music.  We are teaching Scott Houston’s Play Piano In A Flash in a group setting as well as private instruction with our teacher Marko Paul.

If  you have a chance drop by in Mission Valley in San Diego, Ca.  We would love to meet you and show you our Sheet Music Department, the School of Music and the Performance Hall.

See you soon.

Scott Houston Is Coming To

Scott Houston Will Be Here With Us On FRIDAY!

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

When I first had the idea of (along with some others) I really wanted to underscore the fact that music should be fun and exciting.  All of my life music has been an extension of my mood and personality.  Sometimes quiet and blue other times very emotional and most of the time very up tempo and exciting.  I had not thought of helping others feel what I had felt most of my life.

Last year we began the School of Music.  It immediately grew to an acceptable number and we have been working as status quo for about a year now.  Last month for some reason I had more people than usual question me about our lesson program and how it works.  I answered the questions and it was not until someone expressed to me that their life long dream was to be able to play the piano that I realized status quo was no longer enough.

This brings me to the present.  Marko Paul has done a fantastic job teaching people to play the piano.  I have even taught a few classes myself and had an absolute blast doing it but, now I see that “enough is simply NOT enough”.  Many people are wanting to learn to play the piano and understand music so, we are giving music and music lessons an all out push.

Play Piano in a Flash is one of the classes that we are teaching in a group setting.  It is written by Scott Houston “The Piano Guy” on KPBS.  He plays the piano and teaches the piano in a televised class that he has won four emmys for.  We are his exclusive franchise in San Diego County and have been working with him for over a year now.  I am so excited about this because i get to teach this “easy to learn” class of adults.  We just began a new class last night and it is going great.

Marko is teaching mostly private classes and one on ones with younger and older students and his classes are really growing.  We are considering now a young man to add to the teacher line up and after talking with him last night I cant wait until we are all on board together.

As we are learning and teaching I will add more workshops such as the history of music, the origins of musical instruments and perhaps “how a piano works” class that I get to teach.  I love this class because it is about my real passion.

If you are considering taking piano lessons……..NOW is the time.  In Scott Houston’s words:

Drop by and say hello sometime, we would love to meet you

Happy New Year

Friday, January 1st, 2010

I was talking to a customer today that told me she would be very happy to see 2009 go.  I understand why she felt that way but, 2009 has been a decent year for us.

I met some great people.  Had lots of fun teaching.  The students have all been a lot of fun.  Sold some pianos to very satisfied customers.  Learned that I could make it in the face of some undeniably difficult times.  Found the strength, energy and will to walk in the door every morning with a smile on my face and expecting great things.

Precision Piano Moving has had a great year, Accutone Piano Tuning has had a great year, the Roland Learning Center has had a great year and in each one of these categories they have had a better year than last.  PianoSD has been affected to the extent that while 2008 saw more sales than 2009 by a very slim margin, the other departments were able to contribute and has given us a year that ,while not increasing in sales, has not plummeted like so many others.

God has blessed us and shown us that we are able to make it and by His grace we will continue.

What about 2010 ?

We are planning great things for 2010.  I can’t make all the announcements yet, but, be prepared to see some eyebrows lifted.  I can’t wait.

In the meantime, stop by and say hello.  I would love to meet you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY and remember to watch our TV show on Monday at 7.  Just log into and click on “watch our latest videos”.

We have been working on so many projects this month it has been difficult to find enough time to report it all.

First of all, the top news is that we will be working with a new education platfrom that is designed to teach special need kids how to play the piano.  Cathy Hirata and her group will be joining us in September to host some workshops and teacher/parent meetings to discuss how teaching special needs children is so important today.  I can’t wait to tell you about the corporations and organizations that will be involved and how such an outstanding program will benefit all of San Diego.  More exciting news to follow.

Our new ad for Bechstein “the worlds finest piano” broke this week in Premier magazine.  We are going to be showing off at a beautiful home in Rancho Santa Fe next weekend.  I will try to get the announcement out in the blog this week.  You are all invited, details to follow.

Band instrument business is beginning to heat up.  We are going to continue this year supplying some of the local organizations with band instruments.  This is a very exciting business.

I had the occasion to go to the Zoo last night and watched all of the kids dancing and commented on how excited they were about music and how much they all seemed to love it.  I must say that it was really cute to watch the kids dancing while the sound of the small band was playing right outside of a food court.  I wish for each of them to grow up loving music and learning how to play is such a fun and great experience.

Of course we are still hosting the piano at the Chargers stadium this year.  Our first game is tomorrow.  Hopefully this will prove to be an exciting season for them.

Precision Piano Movers located here in the building with us has asked me to let you know that they are able to help you when you need your piano moved or stored.

Drop by sometime, we would love to meet you.

I enjoyed this article

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

I enjoyed this article because I talk with people daily that say: “I wish I had never stopped taking lessons, I used to play the piano, I was in marching band, I loved music but hated to practice, blah, blah, blah”. Its never to late to begin learning music. On whatever level you choose you can play and you can enjoy making music. It all depends on you.

When we started Play Piano in A Flash, we learned from so many students that they CAN play and have an absolute blast making music. I listen from my office sometimes when the students are laughing and clapping or counting out loud or singing. It makes me smile to know that we are able to help bring so much positive influence in peoples lives.

Join us and we can make you smile and laugh too.

Drop by and say hello, we would love to meet you.
